CHÁVEZ HUERTA BEST-FUNDED SCHOOL ADDITION & RENOVATION TO BREAK GROUND

PUEBLO, CO (January 23, 2023) – Chávez Huerta K-12 Preparatory Academy (CHPA) and Nunn Construction will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new 70,000-square-foot expansion at the Dolores Huerta Preparatory High School building. The addition and renovation project will mark the start of an eagerly anticipated permanent middle school attached to the existing high school. The ceremony is set to begin at the old Ersilia Cruz Middle School gym on Friday, February 3 at 9 a.m.

This two-story middle school addition will include 20 classrooms, a kitchen with dining space, and a theater area, while the high school portion of the project will add 13 classrooms. This expansion will allow the removal of modular classroom buildings, which have been on campus for more than 20 years.

The Colorado Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant, provided through the Colorado Department of Education, is funding approximately $30 million of the project. About $5 million in remaining costs will be paid by CHPA.

The Colorado Department of Education Division of Public School Construction Assistance primarily administers a capital construction grant program known as Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST). The BEST program focuses on helping public schools with a multitude of capital construction needs, from new roofs and boilers to major renovations and new schools. The goal of the BEST program is to provide first class, high performing, 21st century facilities.

The BEST Program is a competitive grant program available to all public school districts, charter schools, institute charter schools, boards of cooperative educational services and the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind.

In July 2022, Nunn Construction completed construction for Ersilia Cruz Transitional Middle School. The building will transition into the elementary school once this permanent middle school is complete.

“We have really enjoyed getting to know the CHPA team through working on both schools,” said Chris Sparks, Nunn’s Assistant Project Manager. “It’s inspiring, seeing how committed they are to providing these great new learning environments for their students and staff.”

CRP Architects, architect for Ersilia Cruz Transitional Middle School, will also provide architectural design services for the BEST School Addition and Renovation. Construction is slated to reach completion in April 2024.
